Russia: Japan is the only country that refuses to fully recognize the outcome of World War II
Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, responded today to the statement by Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada regarding the Soviet Union's hostile action against Japan on August 9, 1945, and the "illegal occupation" of the Southern Kuril Islands by Soviet troops.
The Russian Foreign Ministry considers Tokyo's statements about Russia's "illegal occupation" of the Southern Kuril Islands unacceptable, and in the days leading up to the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory over militarist Japan, such statements sound especially offensive.
"The Japanese government stubbornly misinterprets the Second World War and its outcomes, which determine the fate of humanity. This clearly proves the core of revenge in modern Japanese policy. In fact, Japan is the only country on Earth that refuses to fully recognize the results of World War II, attempting to 'beautify' or cover up the numerous crimes committed by the Japanese army during its brutal expansion in East Asia in the first half of the 20th century. The statement by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs is absolutely unacceptable, and it is especially unacceptable just before the 80th anniversary of the victory over militarist Japan and the end of the Second World War on September 3rd."
Zakharova added that Moscow considers such statements unacceptable.
"We believe that statements overturning the results of World War II are unacceptable for politicians of Mr. Okada's level. The Japanese government cannot change the objective reality in any way. According to the legal basis set out in the post-war agreements of the Allies and the United Nations Charter, the Southern Kuril Islands were transferred to the Soviet Union, and its successor is the Russian Federation. On the eve of this memorable day on September 3rd, we once again call on Tokyo to fully recognize its responsibility for the aggression it launched in Asia and sincerely apologize for the suffering caused to the peoples of various countries."
