Iran Summons Ukrainian Diplomat: Presents Protest Note Over Attack on Caspian Cargo Ship
The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine's acting ambassador and delivered a protest note regarding the Ukrainian military's attack on an Iranian merchant vessel in the Caspian Sea. During the meeting, Iran stated it would "firmly defend its national security and interests" and would not tolerate any actions endangering the lives and property of its citizens.
Manuchehr Mollaei, Assistant Foreign Minister of Iran, said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran will resolutely safeguard its national security and interests. Any act targeting the lives and property of our citizens will be met with a response."
It is reported that on July 25, the Ukrainian armed forces attacked this Iranian cargo ship, causing an explosion aboard. One crew member was killed and another injured. Iran regards this incident as a violation of the UN Charter and an act of aggression. Kiev has yet to issue any response to the event.
Iran formally reserves the right to take retaliatory measures. Tehran emphasized that attacking merchant vessels constitutes "hostile criminal conduct." Previously, Iranian media had warned that the entire territory of Ukraine lies within range of Iranian ballistic missiles.
