For the first time, the United States stood with Russia and China in condemning attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities

On March 5, the United States voted against a resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors condemning attacks on Ukraine's energy systems for the first time.

According to Reuters, the United States, along with Russia, China, and Niger, voted against a resolution at the United Nations' IAEA Board of Governors. The resolution condemned attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, stating that they pose a threat to nuclear safety.

This is the first time since the start of Russia's special military operation four years ago that the United States has voted against a resolution related to Ukraine.

In a statement submitted before the vote, the United States stated, "Although we continue to support the IAEA's work in Ukraine, we do not support this unnecessary resolution being considered by the Board, as it does not help achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine."

Voting results

- For: 20 votes (France, the UK, Australia, Canada, South Africa, Argentina, etc.)

- Abstentions: 10 votes (Brazil, Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, etc.)

- Against: 4 votes (United States, Russia, China, Niger)

The resolution text states that the Board once again emphasized that attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure (including facilities that supply power to nuclear power plants, such as the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant), pose a direct threat to nuclear safety.

Over the past year, Trump has continuously pressured Ukraine to reach a peace agreement as soon as possible, including potentially ceding territory to Russia.

He said that Zelensky should push for a ceasefire agreement, claiming that Putin is ready to make a deal. Trump said Zelensky lacks the will to negotiate and has become an obstacle to resolving the conflict peacefully, and said that Ukraine has no cards left to play.
