Dutch Minister's Visit to China: Hopes to Resolve Nexperia Dispute

According to Reuters, from July 7 to 9, Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Sigrid Schjetland led a delegation on a three-day visit to China, with stops in Beijing and Shanghai. The accompanying delegation consisted of 17 Dutch companies spanning sectors such as logistics, agriculture, and high technology. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated this marks the first time since April 2018 that a Dutch minister has led an economic and trade delegation to China.

Reuters reported on July 7 that Schjetland said in Beijing on Tuesday that the Netherlands and China are cooperating "extremely well" to resolve disputes involving chipmaker Nexperia.

Speaking before her visit, Schjetland stated: "Over the past decades, we have established close trade ties with China. One goal of this visit is to further strengthen bilateral trade relations, and raising our own concerns is part of that. I look forward to discussing common opportunities and challenges in the trade sector with Chinese counterparts in Beijing."

The report noted that during Schjetland’s visit, China and the Netherlands still have not reached consensus on properly addressing the differences concerning Nexperia. Meanwhile, the United States is preparing new regulations aimed at pressuring the Netherlands to tighten export controls on semiconductor equipment to China.

On June 6, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China and the Netherlands are important partners for each other. Advancing dialogue and cooperation with an open and pragmatic spirit aligns with the shared interests of both countries. China welcomes greater dialogue and exchanges between business departments of both nations based on mutual respect, and deeper cooperation.
