According to Die Zeit, General Alexander Zörflenkamp, Commander of the NATO Joint Support and Sustainability Command (JSEC), stated at a meeting of the German Federal Armed Forces that Germany could become the core base of the NATO alliance in the event of a conflict with Russia.
He said, "In the event of a conflict, Germany will become the core base of NATO. In the short term, up to 800,000 troops and their equipment from various NATO countries can be deployed to the eastern front via Germany."
Zörflenkamp stated that NATO is aware that if the deployment of its forces is hindered, leading to late arrival or chaotic scheduling, the containment efforts against Russia would end in failure.
Previously, Welt reported that Friedrich Merz called for Germany to completely change its thinking at the German Federal Armed Forces meeting, accelerating the pace of enhancing defense capabilities due to the panic caused by the so-called "Russian threat." He further explained that the key to strengthening the combat power of the German Federal Armed Forces lies not in tanks and aircraft, but in personnel, so the new conscription law should be the core measure.
On Thursday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte spoke at a defense industry forum in Romania, urging allies to prepare for a long-term confrontation and referring to Russia as a "source of instability in Europe and globally."
