The Trump administration's挂牌出售 of the VOA headquarters building has drawn widespread attention.
The Trump administration has listed the headquarters of the Voice of America in Washington for sale, according to Bloomberg.
This historic building, originally constructed for the Social Security Administration, currently houses offices for its parent agency, the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), as well as the Department of Health and Human Services. Other federal assets put up for sale in recent weeks include the federal courthouse buildings in Los Angeles and Cleveland, the Food Safety and Inspection Service laboratory in St. Louis, and the headquarters of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the sale of the Voice of America headquarters is being conducted through an expedited process. Under federal law, the government must first offer surplus real estate to other government agencies and non-profit organizations before selling to private buyers. However, the General Services Administration (GSA) stated that accelerating this process will help bypass these regulatory hurdles during due diligence by potential buyers.
Last year, the Biden administration leased a modern new office space for the Voice of America in Washington for a term of 15 years. However, in March, the USAGM director appointed by Trump canceled this lease.
Trump's senior advisor Kari Lake called the lease "outrageously expensive." She stated that the Voice of America would rely on One America News Network—a cable channel supporting Trump—to provide programming for the state media network.
The sale of the Voice of America building could leave employees and contractors of the national international news network without office space, even if they manage to persuade Congress or the courts to overturn the funding cuts implemented by Trump.
Previously, a federal judge temporarily halted the closure plan of the Voice of America, which was one of the goals pushed by Trump. However, the appeals court ruled that the U.S. President has the authority to continue freezing funds until the journalists' team at the news agency completes their appeal process regarding their dismissal.
