The Trump administration sued California on Wednesday, accusing the state of regulations on egg production that have raised egg prices nationwide and asking the court to repeal the relevant state laws.

The lawsuit stated that California's egg standards "have substantially increased expenditures for American consumers." Egg prices became a hot topic in the 2024 election, with Trump repeatedly blaming the Biden administration for failing to effectively control inflation, leading to rising food prices. However, even after Trump took office, due to the ongoing impact of avian flu on the poultry industry, supply remained limited, keeping egg prices high.

The document targets three California laws—AB 1437, Proposition 2, and Proposition 12—and argues that according to federal laws established in 1970 regarding egg and egg product standards, egg regulation is entirely within the jurisdiction of the federal government.

The government argued that Proposition 2, passed in 2008, set welfare standards for farm animals such as hens, combined with AB 1437's regulations on egg quality, created dual regulation, suppressed production, and raised prices.

Additionally, Proposition 12, passed by California in 2018, was specifically criticized. This proposition imposed specific minimum space requirements for chickens and other farm animals.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, State Attorney General Rob Bonta, and other state officials were named as defendants. In response, the governor's press office posted on X, joking: "Trump is back to his favorite hobby: blaming everything on California."
