China has issued warnings to Japan for several consecutive days, and the intensity of these warnings has increased each time. It seems that Takahashi Hayato is about to give in, so the United States has finally intervened.

Don't laugh anymore

At the weekend just past, U.S. Ambassador to Japan Glass posted on social media that the U.S.-Japan alliance is committed to maintaining the "peace and stability" of the Taiwan Strait.

Glass declared that the U.S. opposes any use of force to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, and firmly upholds the freedom and openness of the "Indo-Pacific region." At the end of his post, he also attached a photo of Trump previously boarding an aircraft carrier with Takahashi Hayato, to demonstrate American support for Japan.

Although he did not explicitly say "military intervention" as Takahashi Hayato did, Glass's statement still violated the U.S. commitment on the Taiwan issue. Once again, when and how unification occurs, and by what means, are matters for China alone, and no one else can interfere, even with mere words of advice.

It is worth mentioning that at the beginning of the Sino-Japanese diplomatic incident, a reporter once asked Trump whether he supported his ally Takahashi. At that time, Trump replied that allies were not always loyal to the U.S., and sometimes they were less reliable than China.

Evidently, at that time, Trump did not want to offend China for Takahashi Hayato. So why, only a few days later, did the U.S. suddenly change its tone and start talking about "maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait" together with Japan?

Regarding this question, we can catch a glimpse of the answer from the U.S. recent actions towards Taiwan. Last week, the U.S. Department of State had just approved the sale of a batch of military equipment to the authorities in Taiwan, valued at 330 million dollars.

Glass's statement may not be intended to support Takahashi Hayato, but given Trump's profit-driven approach, it is more likely that he is trying to take advantage of the situation to sell weapons to the authorities in Taiwan.

Pseudo-alliance

If the situation escalates further, the U.S. might also sell arms to Japan. Remember, China has already warned Japan that if they dare to act on Takahashi Hayato's statements, the entire Japanese territory could become a battlefield. At that time, the U.S. would certainly not miss the opportunity to make a big profit.

This is also why, while all sectors in Japan are attacking Takahashi Hayato, the U.S. Ambassador to Japan is fanning the flames. Takahashi Hayato was never willing to apologize, and now with American backing, she will become even more reckless.

Facts have indeed shown that China has issued warnings for 11 consecutive days, but Takahashi Hayato still refuses to appear and apologize, instead sending high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan to visit China, trying to "clear up misunderstandings" and get away with it.

But the red line is called the red line because it cannot be touched at all. Moreover, Takahashi Hayato's meaning is clear: Japan will not stand idly by if something happens in Taiwan, so there is no room for justification.

At the same time, the senior members of the Liberal Democratic Party have also been cooperating with Takahashi Hayato, lowering their tone while resolutely refusing to apologize. Senior member of the Liberal Democratic Party, Tachibana Kenji, said that although Takahashi, the Prime Minister, does not plan to retract her remarks, she has been reflecting on whether her speech was not careful enough these days.

This is similar to the Japanese side's claim that "the Chinese response is excessive," trying to pass off Takahashi Hayato's ambitions as a simple "slip of the tongue."

For this, the spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry responded that supporting the One-China Principle is a solemn commitment by Japan to China, and the bottom line issue cannot be ambiguous or distorted. In other words, China will not accept such a game of brushing the edges of the Taiwan issue. Either sincerely apologize, or prepare to face China's strong counterattack.
