Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that excluding Turkey from the production project of the fifth-generation American fighter jet F-35 has no legal basis, and Ankara is negotiating with the United States to expect the cancellation of relevant restrictions.
After returning from Azerbaijan, Erdoğan told his accompanying press corps: "Turkey and the United States maintain close cooperation in the defense industry as well as in all other areas. We are negotiating with the United States on these issues to promote bilateral relations and look forward to positive results. In our meeting with (US President Donald) Trump, we have already received positive signals in this direction. We have openly raised the issue of the F-35. Moreover, Turkey was originally a partner in this project, having paid for it and fulfilled its obligations. The reason for excluding us from the project is not legally valid."
The Turkish president pointed out that "Trump had previously indicated indirectly" that this issue is expected to be resolved.
Erdoğan said: "Currently, necessary technical negotiations are being conducted at various levels to develop specific measures. We hope that not only the F-35 issue will be resolved, but also the sanctions under the framework of the US Act to Counter America's Adversaries through Sanctions will be lifted."
