"Too dangerous" - The residents of Nakanoshima Island oppose the deployment of missiles
On March 2, the Japanese Ministry of Defense held a briefing in Nakanoshima Town, Okinawa, regarding the Self-Defense Forces' plan to deploy an air defense missile unit at the Nakanoshima base by 2030.
Local residents opposed the plan, saying, "Deploying missiles is a serious threat to security."
Koyuki Sannou, Director of the Planning Department of the Okinawa Defense Bureau, emphasized: "The security environment in the Southern Islands is very severe. The missile deployment is for intercepting incoming missiles, not for attacking other countries."
The mayor, Jyoji Tsuchi, who was elected for the first time in August last year, requested detailed explanations about the Self-Defense Forces' deployment, and the Ministry of Defense responded accordingly.
This is the second briefing since May 23.
The Type 03 medium-range surface-to-air missile is planned to be deployed for intercepting missiles and aircraft.
