Foreign Media: China Achieves a Major Breakthrough in Hydropower Technology with a 500 MW Turbine in Tibet

China will install independently developed large impulse turbines at the Datang Zalaxia Hydropower Station in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Each turbine has a capacity of 500 megawatts, making it the world's largest single-unit capacity turbine.

The turbine was designed and tested over four years by Harbin Electric Company, weighing 80 tons, and two units will be installed. The hydropower station is located on the Yulu River (a tributary of the Nujiang River) in Tibet, and the Nujiang River flows through Yunnan before emptying into the Andaman Sea.

The turbine is made of martensitic stainless steel, featuring high strength, corrosion resistance, and durability, and is equipped with 21 water buckets with an outer diameter of 6.23 meters. This marks a new breakthrough in China's hydropower technology.
