German media: German Foreign Minister Baerbock cancels visit to China on Sunday
German Foreign Minister Baerbock had originally planned to visit China this Sunday, but the trip has been canceled. A spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry said that Beijing has not confirmed any schedule other than the meeting with the Chinese Foreign Minister.
On Friday, October 24, the spokesperson stated at a regular press conference, "We will reschedule the trip for a later time."
When asked about the reason for canceling the trip, the spokesperson said that the Chinese side only arranged the schedule for the meeting between the German delegation and the Chinese Foreign Minister, "the Chinese side has never confirmed any other meetings besides the one with the Foreign Minister."
Deutsche Welle's commentary believes that such wording clearly expresses Berlin's dissatisfaction.
The spokesperson also expressed concern about China's restrictions on rare earth exports.
However, she refused to explicitly state which country initiated the cancellation of the visit, only stating that Germany was disappointed, as China holds significant influence in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
China: You only mention maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, but do not mention opposing 'Taiwan independence'
Earlier that day, the Beijing Youth Daily reported that during the regular press conference on Friday, a reporter from the newspaper asked, when German Foreign Minister Baerbock told Reuters that the German government's position on the One-China policy had not changed, but would decide on the specific implementation of the policy on its own, and did not support using force to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. What is China's comment on this?
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiancong stated that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China, and the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing all of China. This is the most complete and accurate expression of the One-China principle, and it is the only expression, with no room for customization.
Guo Jiancong also said that only mentioning the maintenance of the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, but not mentioning opposition to 'Taiwan independence', is essentially condoning and supporting 'Taiwan independence' activities, which will have a serious impact on the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait. He hopes that Germany will strictly abide by the One-China principle and clearly oppose any 'Taiwan independence' secessionist acts.
