Incident Details
According to the police, the elderly person who lived in Vancouver's Chinatown was attacked by multiple people in an alley in the Downtown Eastside on the afternoon of March 18. When found, he was seriously injured and rushed to the hospital for treatment, eventually passing away from his injuries on March 31.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Main Street and East Hastings Street, behind the Carnegie Community Center.
That day, the elder had told his family that he would go to the restroom at the community center, but after leaving for 20 minutes, he did not return. The family searched everywhere but failed to notice him in the back alley.
About two hours later, the family received a call from the hospital and learned that he had been admitted. It is understood that a nurse was the first to discover the injured elder.
Due to no obvious suspicious circumstances when discovered, the police were notified the next day after his death (April 1).
Suspects Identified
The information available to the police shows that the elder had interactions with three people before his death. The police believe he did not know these three individuals.
Currently, the Vancouver Police Homicide Unit has intervened in the investigation and confirmed the identification of three individuals involved. The case is still under further investigation.
The community where the elder lived was extremely shocked!
A non-profit organization near the Carnegie Community Center expressed that the elder group in Chinatown has been deeply affected; they are one of the most vulnerable groups and urgently need more protection and support.
Arson Attack on Police
Beating defenseless elderly people is truly despicable, and meanwhile, the public feels uneasy about Vancouver's security.
Another shocking scene occurred in the East End of Vancouver!
Two patrolling officers on the street were suddenly attacked by a man who poured flammable liquid and set fire to them. One officer caught fire, while the other's clothing was burned.
What was even more shocking was that the man was a fugitive wanted for ten charges across the province...
Vancouver Police Department spokesperson Tania Visintin said that the incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Thursday (April 10). Two officers from Task Force Barrage were walking patrol near the intersection of E. Hastings St. and Carrall St.
This special task force aims to strengthen policing in East Vancouver and crack down on organized crime.
That day, the two officers noticed a man jaywalking and attempted to approach and question him when the man suddenly fled.
The officers immediately began pursuit and successfully subdued him. Unexpectedly, during the process, the man used flammable material to set fire to the officers and then fled again.
They immediately called for backup via radio and extinguished the fire themselves.
The support team quickly arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect nearby.
The police revealed that the suspect was a 40-year-old Vancouver man who was hospitalized due to burns after arrest and remains in custody. Further investigations found that the man had already been wanted across the province for ten charges.
The Vancouver police are currently considering filing additional charges against him, including: assault with a weapon on a police officer, obstructing official duties, and violating release conditions.
This very serious and dangerous event once again highlights the challenges facing Vancouver's security.
