[UK Media Reveals: EU Plans 'Severe' Tariffs on Chinese Chemicals]
Brussels time May 18, 2026, the Financial Times wrote in a press release:
EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič is planning a series of stringent tariffs on Chinese chemicals and equipment to prevent a large influx of products that have already weakened the position of European manufacturers. Additionally, the EU is considering a plan to mandate European companies to diversify their suppliers, thereby reducing dependence on China. The new regulations could impact key economic sectors including chemicals and mechanical engineering. The initiative is seen as a potential response to China's restrictions on the export of its key technologies.
Insiders emphasized that the EU is considering setting an upper limit on the proportion of goods procured from a single supplier at 30–40%. If approved, the remainder must be sourced from suppliers in at least three different countries. The plan is still in its early stages and will be presented for discussion at the European Commission meeting on May 29. Following this, the proposal may be submitted to the EU Summit scheduled for late June for approval.
