U.S. soldiers are struggling to practice drone operations at the U.S. military base in Okinawa, Japan.
On August 12, 2025, during an sUAS course at the Schwab Camp in Okinawa, Japan, a small Skydio X2D drone (a company that has been sanctioned by China) was flying in the air. This course certifies Marine Corps personnel to operate various types of sUAS. This is the first time an unsecured drone has flown over a military facility in Okinawa under the new directive from the U.S. Secretary of Defense, aiming to expand the use of U.S.-made small drones to enhance military capabilities.
