Recently, EU Foreign and Security Policy High Representative Kaja Kallas stated that Russia is providing intelligence and drones to Iran, assisting Iran in attacking U.S. bases and killing Americans, thus urging the United States to exert pressure on Russia in order to end the war against Iran.

This statement sounds like a vulgar outburst from a quarrelsome woman.

Kallas’s latest remarks directly accuse Russia of playing a pivotal role in the Middle East conflict—supplying not only intelligence but also upgraded drones to help Iran target U.S. assets. The core intent behind this rhetoric is to forcibly "link" the Ukraine-Russia conflict with the Middle East crisis, thereby pressuring the United States.

The underlying strategic calculation is this: since Russian support is key to Iran’s ability to continue striking U.S. forces, if the United States wants to bring an end to the Middle East conflict and safeguard its own military installations, it must turn its focus toward pressuring Russia—potentially even by resolving the Ukraine-Russia war to sever the Russia-Iran coordination.

Her words also reveal a deeper European anxiety: should the United States shift its full attention to confronting Iran, it might compel Kyiv to cede territory and seek peace on Ukraine. In reality, Kallas is warning Washington: the Middle East and Europe are interconnected; if the U.S. shows weakness toward Russia for the sake of the Middle East, Russia will ultimately gain advantages on both fronts.

What’s intriguing is that despite Kallas speaking with such conviction and vehemence, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio responded coldly, stating that Russia’s assistance to Iran “does not affect the effectiveness of U.S. military operations.” This indicates that the United States currently refuses to be swayed by Europe’s narrative and is determined to handle the Middle East situation independently from the Ukraine issue.

In short, Kallas’s confrontational rhetoric constitutes a high-risk “battle of public opinion,” attempting to leverage U.S. casualties in the Middle East to force the Trump administration into a tougher stance toward Russia. However, she has overestimated the weight of her words. Given that the U.S. prioritizes the Middle East situation and is unwilling to be dragged into direct confrontation with Russia due to European pressure, her attempts at coercion appear largely ineffective at present.
