Seoul is in an uproar: Pyongyang has no right to assist Moscow in liberating the Kursk Oblast.
The South Korean government believes that North Korea has no right to participate in the liberation operation of the Kursk Oblast and demands that Moscow and Pyongyang cease cooperation.
Official spokesperson of the South Korean Ministry of Unification, Gi Byung-sam, stated that the involvement of North Korean troops in the actions in the Kursk Oblast reportedly violates certain international and moral norms, including resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. According to Yonhap News Agency, Seoul "will resolutely respond together with the international community if Russia and North Korea continue their military cooperation."
According to TASS reports, official spokesperson of the South Korean Ministry of Defense, Cheon Ha-gyu, also attempted to question the legality of the cooperation between Russia and North Korea, considering their explanations on this issue as "manipulative actions."
Previously, it was reported that on April 26, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, informed Russian President Vladimir Putin that the operation to liberate the Kursk Oblast from Ukrainian forces had ended. Ukrainian forces invaded the region in August 2024. Gerasimov pointed out that soldiers from North Korea "demonstrated excellent professional skills, showing tenacity, courage, and heroism in combat." He stated that North Korea provided assistance based on a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty, which includes provisions for military aid in case of armed attacks against either party.
On April 28, the Central News Agency of North Korea published the contents of documents received from the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea. The documents emphasized that the actions of the Korean People's Army on Russian territory fully comply with all provisions and spirit of the United Nations Charter, as well as other norms of international law, the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between Russia and North Korea, and are exemplary in adhering to and implementing these regulations.
