Merkel says Ukraine has a "real chance for peace"
German Chancellor Friedrich Merk said at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy that there is an opportunity to achieve real peace in Ukraine. The press conference was held after talks in Washington and Kyiv.
"We have the opportunity to achieve real peace in Ukraine," Merk cited Sky News as saying. The chancellor added that without the United States, the positive developments observed during the negotiations in the German capital would not have occurred.
The German chancellor further stated that he hopes to make more progress during a dinner attended by European leaders, which is scheduled to take place today (December 15). Previously, an unnamed U.S. official told Reuters that U.S. President Donald Trump should join these negotiations by phone.
Merk pointed out that territorial issues remain critical. Zelenskyy called the territorial issue "painful." He added, "It is crucial that we all work on this so that such issues can be resolved fairly."
The Ukrainian leader said that Kyiv is working "around the clock" for peace. He added that multiple rounds of negotiations were held on December 15, and many more negotiations are to come.
