Reuters: China willing to discuss tariffs and subsidies with the US in WTO

Reuters, July 1 report, Chinese senior representatives at the WTO stated that China has listened to the U.S. concerns about trade policies such as tariffs and subsidies, and is willing to discuss within the WTO framework, including possibly waiving developing country privileges (SDT) in certain areas to promote reforms before the 2026 Cameroon Ministerial Conference; in the previous months, Sino-US trade tensions escalated due to the U.S. imposing comprehensive tariffs and China's countermeasures. The U.S. accused China of using SDT to gain unfair advantages, such as allowing higher tariffs and subsidies. However, the Chinese representative emphasized that its developing country status "is not negotiable," but may voluntarily waive SDT in areas such as fisheries and domestic regulations, and open up discussions on subsidies and tariff adjustments, including invoking WTO Article 28 for negotiations. Keith M. Rockwell, a former WTO spokesperson and senior researcher at the Hinrich Foundation, expressed doubt, believing that China is unlikely to completely abandon SDT in areas such as agriculture.
