US media: A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that China is rapidly catching up with the United States in the global research field. Analysis of nearly 6 million papers found that in 2023, the proportion of Chinese scientists taking the lead in Sino-US joint research reached 45%, a significant increase from 30% in 2010, and it is expected that by 2027 or 2028, the two countries will be on equal footing in leadership.
The study was jointly completed by scholars from Wuhan University, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Chicago. It used machine learning to analyze research contributions and authorship data to measure "leadership" in research rather than quantity.
The report points out that in 11 key technology fields, including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, energy, and materials science, China is expected to be on par with the United States by 2030. At the same time, the US research system has been in turmoil due to budget cuts and staff reductions under the Trump administration, leading to the outflow of research talents. China also invests about 33.3 billion yuan in education cooperation to fund foreign students, enhancing its research diplomatic influence.
