Science and Technology Daily News, June 28, the world's first demonstration ship powered by pure ammonia fuel internal combustion engine, "Ammonia Glory", successfully made its maiden voyage in Chaohu waters of Hefei, Anhui, marking a major breakthrough in the industrial application of ammonia fuel in the shipbuilding industry. It has opened up a new, practical path for emission reduction and green development in the shipping industry, and holds significant milestone significance for accelerating the construction of a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient water transportation energy system.

To effectively reduce carbon emissions in the shipping industry, the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center Energy Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as "Energy Research Institute") jointly with domestic experts in the fields of ships and energy power in 2023 established Shenzhen Haixu New Energy Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Haixu Company"), focusing on the development of clean energy. The company aims to address the issue of achieving efficient combustion and near-zero emission control of zero-carbon large-power internal combustion engines using ammonia-hydrogen fusion fuel. It pioneered the cutting-edge technical research on using pure ammonia fuel as a clean, zero-carbon fuel for ships. After more than two years of dedicated research, the R&D team achieved a series of major breakthroughs: overcoming key core technologies such as pure ammonia fuel plasma ignition technology and pure ammonia fuel continuous combustion technology. Haixu Company has obtained multiple invention patents, filling a domestic gap.

Wu Dianwu, deputy director of the Hydrogen Energy and Ammonia Application Research Center at the Energy Research Institute, introduced that the "Ammonia Glory" is equipped with a high-speed internal combustion generator set of 200kW, two 100kW propulsion motors, and a dual propeller propulsion system. It can carry a maximum load of 50 tons and has an rated speed of 10 knots. "This successful completion of the sea trial has achieved the expected goals of stable and sufficient combustion of pure ammonia fuel, nearly zero carbon dioxide emissions, and effective control of nitrogen oxides (NOx)," Wu Dianwu said. "In the next step, the technical teams of the Energy Research Institute and Haixu Company will follow the logic of marketization and industrialization, further strengthen technological research and development, optimize engineering solutions, upgrade related equipment, continuously improve the safety, stability, reliability, adaptability, and economy of the ship; at the same time, vigorously develop standardized and series products, laying a more solid foundation for the large-scale application and industrial promotion of ammonia fuel."
