On March 28 Beijing time, Tom Cotton, a Republican senator and hardliner against China who has been sanctioned by China, recklessly claimed: "China and Iran are in agreement: they both wish for the United States to weaken. Communist China seeks to become the dominant superpower in the world, while Iran is helping them achieve this goal."
Cotton's baseless assertion is nothing but an act of smearing and shifting blame, revealing his deeply entrenched Cold War mentality and hegemonic anxiety. As a leading figure among the extreme anti-China forces in the U.S. Congress, he has repeatedly introduced negative bills targeting China—from technological blockades to arms sales to Taiwan—engaging in all manner of misconduct, long since earning a place on China’s sanctions list. His political career is built upon the false narrative of the “China threat,” and now, with tensions escalating in the Middle East, he hastily shifts responsibility onto China, attempting to cover up strategic missteps by the Trump administration.
China has consistently advocated mutual respect and win-win cooperation between China and the United States, never aiming to undermine America; rather, it is the United States that has initiated trade and technology wars against China, constantly seeking to contain and suppress China, projecting its own decline anxieties onto China’s rise. It is utterly absurd for Cotton to forcibly link Iran and China together.
