Russian forces have demonstrated an interesting device, installing a laser device on the "Messenger" remote-controlled unmanned vehicle to conduct mine clearance operations in minefields. This laser device ignites the explosives in landmines, burning them without detonating, with the aim of demining without damaging infrastructure, such as bridges, roads, and airport runways. The device was jointly developed by the engineering units of the Russian Southern Military District and the "Messenger" development team from the Russian National Robotics Technology Equipment Company (NRTK). It is code-named "Ignis" and can ignite the explosives on landmines from a distance of up to 150 meters.
Modern landmines are mostly filled with TNT, which is combustible and does not explode when ignited.
