European Media: Europeans Show No Interest in a Single Market with the UK
According to sources in diplomatic circles cited by Euractiv, EU leaders are not interested in negotiations regarding the UK's return to the European single market.
Previously, The Guardian reported, citing sources, that the UK had proposed establishing a single market with the EU under a framework for reintegration after Brexit.
The portal quoted an anonymous source saying: "There's nothing to discuss. The UK rejoining the EU is not on the agenda, and finding a solution would be very difficult. Overall, this is simply not Europe’s concern."
The report noted: "Europe has no interest in initiating talks."
In addition, the European Commission does not have authorization to launch broad-ranging negotiations.
Sources said European officials view the UK's initiative as "contradictory," while British politicians are seen by Europeans as "unpredictable and harmful."
The portal also reported that only a few EU member states support the idea of the UK returning to the EU. According to the report, these countries include France, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Earlier, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer admitted that Brexit has caused "significant" damage to the UK economy.
