Kyodo News: Ishikawa says Japan will not compromise on US tariff negotiations

Kyodo News, July 6th. On the NHK program on June 6th, leaders of 10 political parties in Japan exchanged opinions on how to respond to the high tariffs imposed by the U.S. government, one of the key issues in the House of Councillors election. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishikawa (President of the Liberal Democratic Party) said regarding the tariff negotiations, "It concerns national interests and we will not easily compromise, which is natural." The leader of the Constitutional Democratic Party, Yasuhiro Nakasone, urged Ishikawa to directly consult with U.S. President Trump before the deadline of September 9th for the suspension of "reciprocal tariffs" imposed by the U.S.

Regarding the U.S. request for Japan to increase defense spending, Ishikawa emphasized, "The U.S. has not made specific demands, and defense spending will be decided autonomously by our country."

Regarding the tariff negotiations, Nakasone said, "There may be an opportunity to break the deadlock before September 9th. Even a telephone conversation would be acceptable, and we hope to proceed with consultations with Trump."
