Philippine Peace Process May Be Halted! Rebel Group Terminates Implementation of Peace Agreement!

The largest Muslim rebel group in southern Philippines, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, has suspended the demobilization of its remaining 14,000 fighters, claiming that the Philippine government has not fully fulfilled its socio-economic commitments under the 2014 peace agreement.

According to the peace agreement mediated by Malaysia, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels gave up their goal of establishing an independent Muslim state in southern Philippines in exchange for broader autonomy. The organization's 40,000 fighters would be disarmed and receive government assistance for their social integration and livelihoods to help them resume normal lives.

The Bangsamoro region was established under this peace agreement, aiming to replace the previously impoverished five-province autonomous region with a larger, better-funded, and stronger region.

During the transition period, the region has been ruled by former guerrilla leaders, and the transition period will end when regular elections are held in October 2025.

David Dacuycuy, a presidential assistant overseeing the transformation of the Bangsamoro region, said that the rebel front's central committee has decided to delay the demobilization of 14,000 combatants and the surrender of 2,450 weapons.
