Foreign Media: China Has Not Imported US Liquefied Natural Gas, but Still Participates in It

China has not directly imported US liquefied natural gas (LNG) for a year, but Chinese companies still purchase US LNG through long-term contracts and resell it to Europe, due to strong demand in Europe.

the United States became the world's largest LNG exporter in 2023, with exports of nearly 110 million tons in 2024, accounting for more than a quarter of the global total. China is the world's largest LNG importer, importing 4.3 million tons from the US in 2024, accounting for 5% of US exports. Although China has suspended imports of US LNG, it continues to purchase US ethane, with import volume in 2025 exceeding 60% of US exports.

China's total LNG imports decreased by 14% in 2025, due to slowing industrial activity, expansion of renewable energy, increased domestic natural gas production, and increased imports of Russian pipeline gas.
