The UK government has expressed its openness to future collaboration with Canada on the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), which is scheduled to develop the next-generation fighter by 2035.

The GCAP project, currently a trilateral initiative between the UK, Japan, and Italy, aims to develop a sixth-generation fighter, an advanced air combat weapons system incorporating stealth, advanced sensors, and artificial intelligence.

The program will replace the Eurofighter Typhoon and Japan's F-2 fleet and is considered a flagship case of transcontinental defense industrial cooperation.

Analysts suggest that Canada, due to its deep security ties with the UK and membership in the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, is a natural future partner.

Canada has recently selected the F-35 as its next-generation fighter, the same fifth-generation aircraft used by the other three GCAP member countries.

In addition, Sweden and Saudi Arabia have shown interest in the GCAP project but face obstacles to becoming formal members.
