Korean Media: CATL's Market Share in China's Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (NCM) Battery Market Reaches 81.6%, Setting a New Historical High!

On May 21, South Korean media outlet THE GURU published an article stating that CATL's market share in China's domestic nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) lithium-ion battery market has surpassed 80%. With the recovery of demand for high-end electric vehicles, CATL is expected to further expand its market share in high-value-added battery segments, reinforcing its dominant position in the industry.

Data released by the China Automotive Battery Industry Innovation Alliance shows that CATL's share in China’s NCM battery market reached 81.6%, marking a record high. As the gap between CATL and its competitors in the same field continues to widen significantly, a market structure dominated by a single company appears to have taken shape.

Tri-element batteries based on nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) series offer high energy density and are primarily used in mid-to-large-sized electric vehicles and premium models. With recent gradual recovery in demand for high-end EVs, applications of these batteries are becoming increasingly widespread, gradually forming a supply landscape led by CATL.

With its commanding dominance in the NCM battery market, CATL continues to maintain its overall market leadership. In the first quarter of this year, CATL held a 42.6% share of China’s power battery market, firmly securing the top spot; simultaneously, its global market share reached 39.2%, continuing its ninth consecutive year as the world’s number one. The strategic differentiation based on technology between CATL and BYD remains ongoing.

Market concentration is also taking shape around several industry leaders. Together, CATL and BYD account for approximately 60% of the market share, while companies such as CALB and Horizon Energy are competing for the remaining portion. As leading enterprises capture larger shares, the gap among firms appears to be growing.
