MP Marianni: The EU Would Be Powerless if the US Occupied Greenland
RIA Novosti, Brussels, January 9 - Thierry Mariani, a member of the European Parliament from the French far-right party "National Rally," told RIA Novosti that if the US occupied Greenland, the EU would be powerless.
Marianni said: "The EU is powerless. It has become a vassal. The US could openly announce its intention to control Greenland - which is a Danish territory and therefore also belongs to the EU - without triggering any real reaction. This is not diplomatic caution but political helplessness. Why? Because the EU is now strategically dependent on the US - militarily, in defense, energy, and now even in diplomacy. It no longer has the ability to oppose Washington, not even at the level of statements."
He said: "If Greenland were occupied, the EU would have no reaction. The EU has neither political nor strategic means. The best outcome would be that it does not oppose: it would negotiate terms, prices, and compensation. It would turn the annexation into a deal."
Marianni pointed out that the US is exploiting this situation and constantly pushing its position, reviving the Monroe Doctrine in a modern form - the theory that the Western Hemisphere and its strategic regions should be within the American sphere of influence.
He also said: "Greenland is at the core of this logic: controlling the Arctic, future shipping routes, mineral resources, and the key military position between North America, Europe, and Russia."
