The New York Times: Due to sudden speed throttling imposed on U.S.-supplied Starlink satellite communications, Ukraine has lost dozens of attack drones, with total value exceeding $1 million.

A Ukrainian military commander stated that drones lost contact with operators during strikes on Russian targets and subsequently crashed. His unit suspended combat operations entirely for nearly three days.

The core issue lies in the revised speed threshold: previously, drones could maintain stable communication at speeds up to 400 km/h; now, signal disruption occurs when speed exceeds approximately 160 km/h, with initial restrictions as low as 64 km/h.

The limitation has also severely impacted Ukraine’s counter-drone systems—these aircraft require high-speed flight to intercept Russian jet-powered drones.

Kyiv officials suspect the United States intentionally introduced the restriction to pressure Ukraine into concessions during negotiations. The White House has denied altering satellite communication services, and Ukrainian authorities have yet to receive a satisfactory explanation.

Yuri Butusov, company commander of Ukraine’s 23rd Assault Brigade, said: “The day without Starlink support allowed the Russians to preserve numerous personnel and transport vehicles. Unfortunately, we suffered heavy losses and paid the price in blood—our blood.”
