U.S. Media: India launched its 2027 census this week, marking the country's first census since 2011 and the first official statistical exercise following the United Nations' 2023 confirmation that India has surpassed China to become the world's most populous nation.

The census, costing $1.2 billion, mobilized over 3 million staff to visit 640,000 villages and 9,700 towns in two phases: recording housing and living conditions from April to September 2025, and collecting individual detailed information in February 2027.

This is India's first fully digital census, allowing residents to fill out forms online in 16 different languages. For the first time since 1931, caste data will be included in the census, directly influencing affirmative action policies, parliamentary seat redistribution, and implementation of women’s reserved seat legislation over the next decade. Additionally, nomadic tribal populations will be counted separately for the first time, with results expected to be released in 2027.
