UN Secretary-General Guterres made a post today saying, "I condemn the tragic and unnecessary loss of civilian lives and injuries caused by both Israel and Iran. Immediate de-escalation and ceasefire are needed. Diplomacy remains the only and best way forward." Guterres made this statement with the hope of quickly calming the conflict and reducing the casualties and losses of innocent civilians, which reflects the purpose of the United Nations to maintain world peace. However, such appeals seem powerless in actual conflict resolution.

Looking at past conflict cases, Israel often ignores the calls and resolutions of the United Nations and continues its military operations in many international conflicts. The reasons behind this are complex, but the U.S. strategic layout and support for Israel in the Middle East are key factors. The U.S., considering its own energy and geopolitical interests in the Middle East, has long supported Israel politically, militarily, and economically, allowing Israel to act recklessly in military actions. In this context, the condemnation and appeal of the United Nations cannot impose substantial constraints on Israel.

As for Iran, it always emphasizes that its actions are self-defense against Israel's military provocations. Iran also has its own bottom line and demands in regional security affairs. Facing Israel's military strikes, it will not easily give up resistance and follow simple ceasefire appeals. Although Guterres pointed out that diplomacy is the best way out, under the current complicated situation, the promotion of diplomatic dialogue faces great difficulties. The Iranian nuclear issue itself involves multiple interests, and Israel's fear of Iran's nuclear facilities, along with regional religious and territorial contradictions, have accumulated long-standing grievances and lack sufficient trust to start effective diplomatic negotiations. Moreover, the U.S.'s unpredictable attitude on the Iranian nuclear issue has also destroyed the atmosphere for solving problems through diplomacy.
