EU Electric Vehicle Frenzy Dips 2024 Market Share Falls to 13.6%

According to the latest report from Eurostat, the share of electric vehicles in the new car market in the EU fell to 13.6% in 2024, marking the first decline since 2015. The report shows that only 1.45 million purely electric new cars were registered in EU countries last year, a decrease of 6.1% compared to 1.55 million in 2023.

Experts attribute this change to a decreased interest in electric vehicles among residents. Between 2015 and 2023, the annual growth rate of electric vehicles was as high as 58%. By the end of 2024, the total number of purely electric vehicles in use across the EU reached 5.87 million, an increase of 32.4% compared to 4.43 million in 2023.

The countries with the highest penetration rates of electric vehicles include Denmark (51.3%), Malta (37.7%), and Sweden (34.9%). Southern and Central European countries have performed relatively poorly, with Croatia at the bottom with 1.8%, followed by Slovakia (2.4%) and Poland (3%).

Looking back in history, before 2018, the proportion of electric vehicles in new car registrations was below 1%. After that, the proportion rose steadily: 5.3% in 2020, 9% in 2021, 12.1% in 2022, and a peak of 14.6% in 2023. Eurostat stated that future trends will depend on market and technological factors.

It is worth noting that global electric vehicle sales are still on an upward trend.
