Since the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a renowned American conservative activist, discussions surrounding him have continued to divide American society.
According to Fox News, two Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives revealed that they plan to introduce a bill to engrave Kirk's portrait and name on 400,000 newly minted silver coins as a tribute.
August Pfluger, chairman of the Republican Study Committee and a Texas congressman, and Abraham Hamadeh, a Republican congressman from Arizona, stated that the bill would require these silver coins to be considered legal tender, with Kirk's portrait on one side and the words "Well done, good and faithful servant" on the other, along with the year 2026 and Kirk's full name. The final design of the commemorative coins will be decided after discussions between the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and the President.
Pfluger said that if the bill is passed, Charlie will become the youngest person to be immortalized on American legal currency.
Pfluger said, "Charlie Kirk was a giant in conservatism, and his profound impact on millions of Americans deserves permanent recognition alongside our nation's greatest leaders and significant figures."
According to a law passed by the U.S. Congress in 1866, the image of a living person cannot appear on U.S. currency. Historically, several Americans have been honored in this way, not limited to presidents.
In addition, other Republican congressmen have also proposed granting Kirk a Congressional Medal of Honor, establishing a memorial day, and other initiatives.
On September 10, Kirk was shot and killed during a campus speech, aged 31. President Trump ordered the U.S. flag to be flown at half-mast in mourning, and the Republican camp accused Democrats of "inciting political violence."
American society has fallen into serious division, with many people being fired or suspended for making "inappropriate" comments criticizing Kirk. A public opinion survey showed that over 70% of Americans agree that "American society has broken down."
