Reference News Network, October 10 report - According to EFE, on October 9, Brazilian President Lula attended a ceremony at the BYD Brazil factory.
Lula said at the ceremony, "We will continue to strengthen our relations with China," which has been Brazil's largest trading partner for 15 years.
Lula said, "We see each other as important countries in the Global South," and "we hope to be respected and treated decently." He emphasized that he hopes to establish the same relationship with other countries around the world.
The factory is located in the city of Camaçari, in the northeastern state of Bahia, Brazil.
According to the official Weibo account of BYD, on October 9, the 14 millionth new energy vehicle of BYD was officially completed at the Brazil factory.
EFE reported that Wang Chuanfu, founder and chairman of BYD, attended the ceremony. He emphasized that this is the largest factory of the company outside Asia.
According to Wang Chuanfu, this move aims to strengthen BYD's market presence in Brazil, while using the new factory as a base for exports to other Latin American countries.
Electric vehicles (mostly Chinese brands) are increasingly gaining market share in Brazil. According to industry data, since 2025, electric vehicles have accounted for 10% of domestic sales in the Brazilian market.
According to another report by the Brazilian news website 247 on October 9, Rui Costa, head of the presidential civil office, attended the ceremony on the same day and specifically thanked China, emphasizing the importance of the country's role in global growth, especially in the field of technology. Costa said, "I want to thank and express my sincere admiration for the efforts made by the Chinese people in the past and now." He compared China's transformation into a world technological power in just a few decades with the efforts of the people of Bahia to overcome economic difficulties in the region. He said, "The people here, like the Chinese people, have always been striving to change this region, which has historically been marked by negative social indicators."
Costa also emphasized the importance of cultural diversity and integration at the new BYD factory. "Here, perhaps it embodies the dream of shared opportunities for humanity that President Lula articulated at the United Nations. It is a reason for pride for those who want to build a united society to see young people of different backgrounds - black people, Bahians, and Chinese - working together in this factory." Costa concluded, emphasizing the symbolic significance of the factory as a space for international cooperation and common progress. (Translated by Su Jiawei, Han Chao)
