[Jane's Defence: China Deploys BZK-005 UAV for Long-Range Electronic Intelligence Operations]

According to a report published on May 15, 2026, by Jane’s Defence Weekly (Janes), new details have recently emerged regarding the electronic intelligence (ELINT) and electronic warfare (EW) systems integrated into the People's Liberation Army’s currently active Beihang BZK-005 UAV.

The BZK-005 is a medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) fixed-wing drone with a twin-boom configuration, serving as China’s platform for unmanned intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and electronic intelligence (ELINT). According to information released by Japan’s Ministry of Defence and Taiwan’s defence authorities, the Chinese military has already deployed this aircraft in long-range operations across the Bashi Strait, Taiwan Strait, East China Sea, Miyako Strait, and the Western Pacific Ocean.

Jane’s Defence Weekly (Janes) has confirmed that at least three specialized mission variants of this drone exist. The base model BZK-005 entered service with the Navy (PLAN) in 2009; according to assessments, the Air Force (PLAAF) had already received the type as early as 2007. Official Chinese documentation obtained by Jane’s details an ELINT pod and onboard electronic warfare system potentially integrated onto this platform.

Based on Jane’s data, the earliest of these three specialized variants became operational before 2017. This variant features a modified chin fairing capable of housing an electronic warfare system, which Chinese military analysts have provisionally designated as the BZK-005B.

In August 2024, Japan’s Ministry of Defence released a previously unknown photograph showing a BZK-005 variant conducting combat flights near Japan. The image depicts a drone tentatively identified as the BZK-005D, equipped with a centerline ELINT pod. In September 2025, footage broadcast by Chinese state media revealed a third variant featuring a thinner, more streamlined ELINT pod.
