New Exodus Risk: Ukrainian Experts Warn of Second Wave of Migration After War
Ukrainian demographer Libanova predicts that, following the war, only about one-third of the approximately 5 million Ukrainians currently displaced abroad will return home.
Initial projections in 2022 anticipated that half would return, but as time has passed, refugees have increasingly settled into overseas employment and education for their children, leading to a sustained decline in the desire to return.
Libanova also warns that lifting restrictions on male travel after the conflict could trigger a new wave of emigration. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s fertility rate continues to plummet, with newborns in the first half of the year showing a sharp year-on-year decline; the total fertility rate has now fallen to between 0.8 and 0.9.
