Technology is really tempting! The scene of the Japan-Philippines military exercise has caused a stir, with a Japanese officer using a Huawei laptop!

Recently, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Philippine Navy held joint exercises codenamed "Maritime Cooperation 2025." This five-day drill originally focused on traditional subjects such as anti-submarine warfare, maritime search and rescue, and communication coordination, but it unexpectedly went viral due to a detail — Japanese MSDF personnel were using a Huawei MateBook D 14 laptop at the ship's workstation.

The image comes from official exercise photos released by the Philippine Navy: In the tactical information center of the "Murakumo"-class destroyer JS Samidare (DD-106), a Japanese MSDF officer was accessing electronic nautical charts through a silver-gray slim laptop.

When the camera zooms in, the "HUAWEI" logo above the keyboard and the screen's extremely narrow bezel and a body thickness of less than 16 millimeters can be clearly identified — this is the Huawei MateBook D 14 (Intel 12th generation i5 version) launched in 2023.

This is not an accidental event. According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense's public procurement list for 2024, the Maritime Self-Defense Force purchased at least 127 commercial laptops through non-designated channels during the third quarter of that year, including multiple brands, but Huawei models accounted for 38%, approximately 48 units.

These devices are mainly used for non-classified task scenarios, such as logistics scheduling, training records, and meteorological data visualization. It is worth noting that this batch of purchases did not go through the regular military equipment process, but was completed under the name of "general office equipment," thereby circumventing restrictions on specific country suppliers.

Why choose Huawei? Performance parameters may explain the reason. For MSDF units that face tight power resources and need to stay away from port for extended periods, the features of Huawei laptops — lightweight, long battery life, and quick wake-up — are highly attractive.
