Florida Democratic Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick announced her resignation just minutes before the House Ethics Committee was scheduled to review disciplinary action against her, thereby avoiding what was nearly certain to be a expulsion vote. The committee had previously found her guilty of multiple ethical violations, including allegedly diverting millions of dollars in pandemic relief funds for use in her 2021 campaign. Under procedure, the committee could have invoked six types of sanctions that day, with expulsion being one of the harshest and historically rarely used penalties. In a social media statement, Cherfilus-McCormick denied all allegations, calling the investigation a political persecution and claiming her due process rights were violated, which led her to resign rather than continue being entangled in "political games." Just as the Ethics Committee convened to decide on recommended sanctions, the Clerk of the House read out her resignation on the spot. House Ethics Committee Chair Michael Guest subsequently stated that, since she had resigned her congressional seat, the committee had lost jurisdiction over further disciplinary actions against her.
