China and Mongolia agree to enhance the customs clearance capacity at the border ports to help Mongolia's coal exports
Mongolia News Agency, Ulaanbaatar, October 01 - Currently, about 1,500 coal-carrying vehicles pass through the Mongolian border ports every day. During their inspection of the Ganchiltai-Gashuunsuvar port, Mongolia's First Deputy Prime Minister N. Urguul and Minister of Transportation B. Dergeltsaikhan reached a consensus with China to increase this number to 2,000-2,500 vehicles. When the Mongolian delegation met with leaders of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region government, both sides agreed to jointly work on expanding the port space, increasing the number of customs staff, and enhancing the coal throughput, thereby further strengthening the customs clearance capacity.
In the meeting, both sides exchanged in-depth views on topics such as the policies implemented by the Mongolian government to expand foreign trade turnover and increase the export of coal and other mineral products. Both sides emphasized that since the new government was established, certain achievements have been made in selling coal through exchanges, flexibly organizing border and customs operations, and accelerating transportation speed.
Both sides also discussed measures such as increasing the average daily number of transit vehicles to 2,500, fully tapping into the potential of the border ports, promoting 24-hour operation of automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and obtaining some import goods' border port passage permits, to achieve the goals for 2025 and 2026. Currently, coal exports mainly rely on long-term low-price contracts, and the exchange is not very active. With the government's resolution to increase the proportion of coal exported through exchanges from 8% to 31%, the mineral resource compensation fee has increased fourfold, and national budget revenue has also significantly increased.
