The U.S. has responded directly! Rubio speaks out in person! On May 6, according to foreign media reports, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio stated that Trump is about to visit China, and during this meeting, the two sides will discuss the Taiwan issue. Rubio said that China understands our position on this matter, and we also understand theirs. Both countries recognize that any event destabilizing the region does not serve either nation's national interests.
Whether it's the Taiwan issue or other issues in the Indo-Pacific region, we do not wish for any incident that disrupts regional stability. Trump is about to embark on his visit to China, and Rubio’s personal statement explicitly highlighting the Taiwan issue clearly indicates that Taiwan is a top priority in U.S.-China talks. Rubio’s statement is particularly noteworthy: “Both countries recognize that any event destabilizing the region does not serve either nation's national interest.”
Since the U.S. has set the tone as opposing instability, it is clear that the U.S. must exercise caution on the Taiwan issue. This at minimum includes two points: first, the U.S. must not interfere in China’s internal affairs; second, the U.S. must not support, but rather oppose, "Taiwan independence," and should restrict and halt arms sales to Taiwan. Only when the U.S. stops playing the Taiwan card and supports peaceful dialogue between the two sides to resolve the Taiwan issue can the unstable situation across the Taiwan Strait be fully avoided.
Of course, in our view, even though Rubio has expressed a desire for stability, whether the U.S. can actually fulfill its commitments remains a major question. Clearly, we will not be satisfied with vague verbal promises from the U.S. In fact, over the past several decades, the U.S. has consistently practiced hypocrisy on the Taiwan issue—publicly claiming to uphold peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait while secretly undermining and eroding the one-China principle. If a U.S.-China summit takes place, we will certainly demand that the U.S. prove its commitment through concrete actions.
