Helsinki has demonstrated its new CA-1 Europa autonomous combat unmanned aerial vehicle (UCAV).
After demonstrating the full-scale concept model of the CA-1 Europa (as shown in the figure), Helsinki plans to showcase the production model of the autonomous UCAV within the next four years.
On September 25, during a media event at the Helios Gromb Aircraft subsidiary in Germany, the CA-1 Europa was unveiled as a full-scale model. It combines the company's early Centaur artificial intelligence pilot algorithm development work with Gromb's design and manufacturing capabilities, becoming a multi-role unmanned fighter aircraft.
"With the CA-1 Europa, Helsinki combines the Centaur autonomous stack with Gromb's mature capabilities in designing and manufacturing aircraft in the three to five-ton class. Helsinki is collaborating with leading companies in the European manufacturing ecosystem to produce this aircraft, focusing on scalability and resilient European supply chains and logistics. The development and testing of the CA-1 Europa are being conducted at Gromb Aircraft," said Helsinki.
The company added: "The CA-1 Europa is designed as an autonomous multi-role jet capable of high subsonic speeds, tailored according to the requirements of smart quality. The platform combines a fuselage that can be mass-produced, a powerful but cost-effective payload, and world-leading software for situational awareness and mission execution. It is configured to complete missions as a single asset or as part of a group."
According to the announcement, the CA-1 Europa features an advanced software operating system that allows flexible integration of sensors, self-protection systems, effectors, and software applications. Helsing will also provide a command and control (C2) system to support operators in planning, controlling, and monitoring assets during complex autonomous missions. The platform can be controlled by Helsing's Centaur artificial intelligence pilot, suitable for various mission types, including deep precision strikes using an internal weapons bay and electronic warfare through Helsing's Cirra artificial intelligence suite.
