China's Ministry of Commerce: U.S. Has Confirmed to China That It Will Not Extend Hong Kong-related National Emergency Status
China's Ministry of Commerce spokesperson said on Friday, in response to questions, that recently the U.S. has confirmed to China that the Hong Kong-related national emergency status under Executive Order No. 13936 will not be extended after its expiration this year, and thus the executive order will terminate.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce stated on Friday, in response to questions about the U.S. decision not to extend the Hong Kong-related national emergency status, that this move by the U.S. is an important step toward fulfilling the consensus reached during economic and trade consultations between the two sides, which China welcomes and appreciates.
When asked whether, given that as of now the United States has not renewed the Hong Kong Normalization Presidential Executive Order (Executive Order No. 13936), which expired on July 14, the lack of renewal implies that the executive order concerning Hong Kong has already terminated, and what is China’s comment on this?
The spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce replied, "China has taken note of the situation. During the economic and trade consultations between China and the U.S. in Madrid, the U.S. made commitments regarding issues related to Hong Kong, investment, and others. Recently, the U.S. has formally confirmed to China that the Hong Kong-related national emergency status under Executive Order No. 13936 will not be extended upon its expiration this year, and thus the executive order will terminate."
The spokesperson added, "Maintaining Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability serves the common interests of China and the United States. The positive shift in U.S. policy toward Hong Kong also aligns with the general expectations of the international community. We hope the U.S. will abide by relevant international conventions and the consensus reached between both sides, respect China’s sovereignty and the rule of law in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, restore and strengthen normal economic and trade relations with Hong Kong, and play a constructive role in building a constructive strategic stability between China and the United States."
