US Amasses Military Forces in the Caribbean, Venezuela Swears In 5,600 New Soldiers
AFP Caracas, 6th. As the US increases military pressure on the oil-producing Venezuela, the Venezuelan military held an oath ceremony for 5,600 new soldiers today.
The US has deployed a fleet and the world's largest aircraft carrier in the Caribbean under the pretext of combating drug trafficking; in response, Venezuelan President Maduro (Nicolas Maduro) has strengthened conscription.
According to official data, Venezuela currently has 200,000 troops and 200,000 police forces.
Colonel Rendon Vilchez (Gabriel Alejandro Rendon Vilchez) of the Venezuelan Army stated at the ceremony held today at the Fuerte Tiuna, the largest military base in Caracas: "We will never allow imperial forces to invade under any pretext."
According to AFP, since August, the US has deployed a fleet in the Caribbean under the pretext of combating drug trafficking, and has launched lethal attacks on at least 22 suspected drug-smuggling ships, resulting in at least 83 deaths.
Washington accused Maduro's group, the "Cartel of the Suns," and designated it as a terrorist organization on November 24.
Maduro said that these actions by the US are actually aimed at overthrowing his left-wing government and ultimately seizing Venezuela's rich oil resources.
