U.S. House of Representatives 2026 Midterm Election Begins Early in Texas!
To ensure the Republican Party's slim majority in the House of Representatives, Texas Republicans are pushing for congressional district redistricting, attempting to eliminate or merge districts to remove five Democratic House seats. The Republican-controlled redistricting committee has already approved the redistricting plan and submitted it to the state legislature for voting.
Texas Democrats have taken an alternative countermeasure against the Republicans' efforts to redraw the state's electoral map. They chose to leave the state on Sundays to prevent the Texas House of Representatives from reaching the required quorum for voting. Texas requires two-thirds of state legislators to be present to reach a quorum.
The Texas House rules state that if a legislator is absent from a session, they will be fined $500 per day. However, Democratic legislators have no better option than to be absent.
While Texas Democrats were absent from the vote, Democrats across the country have threatened to use the same strategy as in California and New York to respond to the redistricting by Republicans in Texas.
"We must understand the nature of the threat that what they are doing in Texas poses to the nation, which indeed increases the danger to our democracy. Therefore, we must do things that I may not have supported in the past."
