News of an impending agreement has sparked controversy within the Republican Party, with MAGA supporters excited that the war may soon end, while hawks worry that the U.S. is making too many concessions. Some of Trump’s key allies have warmly welcomed the news, calling it a major victory for peace, including House Speaker Mike Johnson. (However, his claim that “Trump is the only one who could get Iran to sit at the negotiating table” is clearly untrue and has ignited online controversy.) Even some Democratic lawmakers skeptical of the war have said this emerging agreement represents the best exit available at this stage. Republican hawks such as Roger Wicker, Lindsey Graham, Hugh Hewitt, and Mark Levin have expressed concerns about the deal—either directly or implicitly. Pompeo has bluntly criticized the agreement being negotiated by the Trump administration, saying it mirrors the Obama-era Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran: “paying money to allow Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to develop weapons of mass destruction and then intimidate the world.” He declared, “This isn’t ‘America First’ at all.” Instead, he advocates opening the Strait of Hormuz, cutting off Iran’s financial lifelines, and destroying enough of Iran’s military capabilities “so it can no longer threaten our allies in the region.”
Other leaders within the MAGA camp have launched fierce attacks on critics. White House Communications Director Jason Zhang stated, “Mike Pompeo doesn’t know what he’s talking about”—adding he should “shut his stupid mouth and let real professionals do the real work.” In response to Senator Ted Cruz’s concerns over the agreement, Trump’s online operatives, including Alex Broussard, also engaged in a heated exchange with Cruz.
