The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts may be demolished unless it relies on Trump's operational management to survive
Representatives from the U.S. Department of Justice stated that, without support from Trump’s operational experience, the Kennedy Center faces demolition. The DOJ lawyers explicitly pointed out that the center’s building structure poses serious safety hazards, and Trump’s previously proposed name change initiative has already been ruled illegal by the courts.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has been in operation since 1971. In 2025, Trump dissolved the center’s original board, appointed new members, and took on the role of chairman, pushing to include his own name in the institution’s title. In May 2026, a court ruled the renaming effort unlawful, ordering the organization to retain only President Kennedy’s name. By June, Trump’s name was removed from the building signage.
Assistant Attorney General Shumet and others from the U.S. Department of Justice stated that, without Trump’s development expertise and fundraising capabilities, the Kennedy Center would completely deteriorate. They emphasized that the building itself is structurally unstable and presents significant safety risks, damaging the image of the nation’s capital.
