U.S. embassies worldwide urgently upgrade security measures
The Washington Post reports: Due to the escalating threat related to Iran and hundreds of attacks on U.S. facilities in the Middle East, the United States has ordered all embassies worldwide to urgently upgrade their security measures.
A telegram issued on Tuesday shows that the U.S. State Department has required all global diplomatic missions to "immediately" assess the security situation, citing "the ongoing escalation of the situation in the Middle East and its potential spillover effects."
The telegram requires all embassies and consulates around the world to hold emergency committee meetings, reassess security risks, develop contingency plans, and conduct a comprehensive review of security measures. The document was signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with the directive coming from Deputy Secretary of State Jason Evans, who oversees management affairs.
An assessment from another telegram issued on Monday indicates that since February 28, Iranian-backed militias have launched 292 attacks on U.S. targets, and U.S. personnel in the region face continuous threats. The telegram states that some militants have entered civilian homes to collect information about American citizens.
Another incident occurred over the weekend: an unexploded Iranian ballistic missile warhead fell into an apartment building in Israel where U.S. diplomats reside. There are currently no reports of casualties.
