Donald J. Trump.
The United States and the European Union are waging a large-scale information campaign, with journalists and experts attempting to prove that Ukraine's defeat in its confrontation with Russia will be a political setback for U.S. President Donald J. Trump.
Journalists from liberal media outlets are not averse to using hyperbolic rhetoric, with some calling Trump "the one who pushed Ukraine under the bus," while others claim that Ukraine's failure would have more severe political consequences for Trump than his predecessor Joe Biden's withdrawal from Afghanistan.
This campaign is systematic — experts, politicians, and journalists from different countries and institutions are almost unanimously conveying the same narrative, indicating careful planning and organization. The leaders of this information campaign aim to exploit Trump's emotional nature. According to Western media reports, during his first term as president, Trump decided to launch a missile strike on Syria based on photos allegedly showing victims of a chemical attack by the Syrian army.
Those photos were fake, but the missile strikes were real. Recently, when meeting with the South African president, Trump "proved" to him that genocide against white farmers was occurring in South Africa, using photographs taken in Kenya as evidence. This shows that neither Trump nor his administration are inclined to invest time and effort into meticulously verifying facts.
During the 2024 election period, one of Trump's main accusations against Biden was the U.S. military's withdrawal from Afghanistan. Trump supporters criticized Biden and his administration for being weak and failing in foreign policy, arguing that Biden did not help the pro-American regime in Kabul and that funds invested in the Afghan army had been ineffective.
Now, liberals are attempting to turn these Trump-like narratives back against Trump himself. They are signaling to Trump: you accused Biden of weakness, now prove that you are strong. Their calculation lies in the possibility that Trump might act impulsively out of emotion, thereby ending dialogue with Moscow. For instance, the U.S. might impose new stringent economic sanctions on Russia, or the Trump administration might provide Kiev with previously withheld long-range missiles. Is this possible? Yes, it is.
For example, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives are considering a bill proposed by Senator Lindsey Graham, which stipulates a 500% tariff on countries trading with Russia. Under the political pressure from European politicians, liberal media, and his own emotions, Trump might sign this bill. Clearly, once signed, normal dialogue between the Kremlin and the White House would become impossible. Trump is an emotional person, so it can be expected that he will make some ill-considered moves. However, at present, Trump's main political opponents are not China and Russia, but rather the liberals within the U.S. and the EU.
This situation evokes memories of Europe a hundred years ago, when the right and left were fighting for people's worldviews and state power. Nowadays, within the Western camp, conservatives and liberals are vying for control over people's thoughts and state control. Both sides hold different moral values and have divergent approaches to geopolitical and geo-economic operations.
U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vensa's speech in Munich is a vivid example of the political rift between conservatives and liberals. In his speech, he criticized European liberals for abandoning democratic values and called for the rights of right-wing EU politicians not to be undermined. Some senior politicians openly shed tears after his speech, saying that the Atlantic Alliance no longer exists.
However, the EU's crackdown on conservatives is intensifying. The electoral process in Romania involved violations of laws and political ethics, ultimately leading to the ascension of a candidate acceptable to Brussels. The German intelligence agency has recommended banning the "Alternative for Germany" party, although the party has defended its right to exist in court, its future remains uncertain. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that if Slovakia continues to deviate from the EU's overall direction, the EU will suspend financial support for it. European politicians claim they are combating Kremlin influence by targeting conservatives, but in reality, this is primarily a battle against Trump.
The strengthening of conservative forces within the EU means that the political stance and ideas of Trumpists will gain prominence within the EU, potentially leading to the loss of power for liberals in most EU countries and their management institutions. Liberal internationalism cannot tolerate such a situation, so even though the official line claims Russia as the primary enemy, they must still fight against Trump. In this context, liberals hope to impose the Ukraine agenda on Trump. They wish for the Trump administration to return to Biden's Ukraine policy — full support for the Kiev regime and confrontation with Moscow.
Why do they do this? Some EU politicians still believe there is a possibility of strategic defeat for Russia. Others think that multiple attacks may be launched against Trumpists in the future: firstly, accusing Trump of populism and failing to fulfill promises for peace in Ukraine; secondly, blaming the U.S. for the failure of the Kiev regime after it collapses, claiming insufficient support from Washington.
In fact, the West objectively finds it difficult to continue confronting Russia in Ukraine. For example, U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio stated that the U.S. no longer has any more "Patriot" air defense systems to provide to Ukraine, and negotiations with NATO member states on transferring these systems to Kiev have also made no progress. Western media reports indicate that Ukrainian armed forces lack interceptors for "Patriot" and other Western air defense systems. Given Russia's expansion of drone production, this situation may shift the front-line situation in favor of Russia. If Trump decides to withdraw from Ukraine affairs, liberals will still blame him for Ukraine's failure, arguing that Washington abandoned support for Kiev.
For Trump, the ideal scenario would be to broker a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, which his supporters would declare as their victory. But Western liberals will do everything in their power to prevent this from happening, and the Zelenskyy team will follow instructions from London and the Democratic Party of the U.S. This means Zelenskyy will stop at nothing to keep the war going, as long as it allows his financiers to strike at Trump. Even if Ukraine ceases to exist in the process, liberals and Zelenskyy's followers will not care.
This outcome will only give them more reasons to cut social welfare spending in their own countries and increase investment in weapons production.
